Martin Morency - Montréal-North

Tell us about yourself. My passion for the game of golf brought me to acquire the required expertise to create and manage the Académie de golf Morency inc., the most important golf academy on the North shore of Montréal.

In my fairly long career, I had the opportunity to implement an important junior camp, organize many tournaments, and conduct golf clinics. I have also taken many classes on supervision, planning, and organization. I have also supervised a proshop where I was in charge of the operations and staff management.

How long have you been a golf professional and/or coach? I began my career in 1980 as greens keeper of the Club de golf l’Épiphanie and, in 1985, I became in charge of the back shop. From 1987 to 1990, I was Assistant Professional at the Club de golf Le Portage in L’Assomption. In 1991, I joined the Golf St-François team where I started as Assistant Professional and eventually became Head Professional from 1993 to 2006. In the winter, from 1991 to 1994, I managed an indoors golf school in Repentigny.

In 1995, I received the Teacher of the Year Award presented by the PGA of Québec. Then, from 1996 to 2006, I became owner and manager of the Académie de golf Morency at Golf St-François, in the summer, and in Lachenaie, in the winter. Gradually, my work as a coach became more important.

As a result, I have been the golf-études coach at Georges Vanier since 2004, teaching professional at Centre de golf le Versant, regional coach for Laval at the Québec Games and Federation’s Cup from 2007 to 2012, was the accompanying coach at Turning Stone from 2010 to 2012, and became the regional coach for the Montréal-North region of Golf Québec in 2012.

Where did you study? I completed my high school degree in 1983. A member in good standing of the PGA of Québec since 1987, I am regularly attending their yearly training sessions. My professional golf is to be able to promote the game of golf as long as possible.

What are your certifications? I am a level II coach and I am currently working on getting my level III certification. In the annual seminars that I regular attend, covered topics include: the rules of golf, club repair, administration and bookkeeping, company management, agronomy, marketing, sport psychology, teaching, and many more. In addition, I took a course at collège de l’Assomption in 1991 on “How to Start Your Own Business”.

In the 90’s I was fairly well known on provincial PGA of Québec Tour where I finished in the top 14 in 1995. I also won a Pro-Am tournament in Mexico in 1997. Nowadays, I concentrate my efforts on improving my teaching expertise in order to help more people have fun in the way they play golf.
