Members of Kanawaki are cheering on Mike Barber has he is chasing the Guinness world record for the number of rounds played at age or better.
84-year-old Mike Barber is in quest of breaking the Guinness World Record for most games played at age or better. The current record is 1138, and Barber currently stands at 1075.
A member at the Kanawaki Golf Club in Montreal, Canada and The Heights Golf Club in Rancho Bernardo, California, Barber annually plays about 240 games and manages to shoot his age or better about 90% of the time. “The target date is April 20, 2023,” Barber says.
Barber’s first round at age or better was at age 70 when he shot 70 at Bernardo Heights Country Club (now known as The Heights Golf Club). His best underage score was 70 when he was 82, but his best score at age or better was 67 when he was 73. He has shot his age or better at 26 different courses.
“The secret,” Barber says, “is to be a reasonably good player in your early years, be able to play 12 months a year in retirement, have good health, and most importantly, be somewhat nerdy in saving every scorecard as Guinness insists on proof of your achievement. There are many stories of people who have shot their age or better many more times than I have, but unfortunately, they cannot prove it. I was lucky that I wanted to keep my cards as souvenirs when I first did it”
